The Power of Single-Session Therapy

In recent years, I’ve noticed a shift in what certain clients seek through therapy. I still remember my first “single-session client”— a college student who called looking for just one or two sessions while on Spring Break with their long-distance partner. They wanted to make the most of their time together by working through a few relationship challenges. We ended up doing two, two-hour sessions over ten days, and the results were remarkable. The fast-paced, focused work allowed us to dive deep, and what might have taken 4-6 weeks in a traditional therapy model was achieved in just days.

Not long after, I received a call from their friend—another partner in a couple interested in this intensive, results-driven approach. From there, the demand grew organically, first through couples, then individuals, and eventually evolving into today. This model has been incredibly rewarding, allowing me to work with highly motivated, goal-oriented clients and see meaningful transformation in a condensed timeframe.

What Is Single-Session Therapy (SST)?

Single-session therapy is a focused, goal-oriented approach designed to provide maximum impact in just one session. Traditional therapy models require weeks or months of commitment, SST operates under the idea that a single, well-structured session can provide individuals and couples with meaningful insights and strategies to improve their well-being.

Recent research from Northwestern University highlights that single-session interventions (SSIs) significantly reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression across various age groups. These interventions have been found to be particularly effective for individuals experiencing acute distress or those who may not require long-term therapy but still need immediate support. Another study from the London Centre for Applied Psychology reinforces this, stating that SST can help individuals reframe their concerns, develop coping strategies, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

The Benefits of Single-Session Therapy

  • Immediate Access – SST eliminates the long wait times associated with traditional therapy, appointments are available for you to receive care when you need it most.

  • Solution-Focused Approach – Rather than spending weeks delving into past experiences, this approach prioritizes actionable strategies that you can implement right away.

  • Empowerment Through Insight – Many clients leave a single session with a new perspective, greater self-awareness, and tools they can use to navigate their current and future challenges.

  • Cost-Effective – Since it does not require an ongoing commitment, these sessions can be a more affordable option for those seeking short-term support.

  • Flexibility – SST appointments are ideal for those who may not need long-term therapy but want guidance during a difficult moment.

Single Session Services: Support When You Need It

Mental health concerns don’t always fit neatly into scheduled appointments. For this reason, the single-session model, often with same-day and next-day availability offers immediate access to professional support. Whether you’re facing a sudden conflict, navigating a tough decision, sitting on a waitlist for ongoing therapy, or simply need a safe space to process your thoughts, a SST appointment provides that place. Even clients who currently see a therapist can benefit from this model— for example, it’s the day after your therapy appointment and a stressor comes up that you need to talk through. Instead of waiting for the next appointment, to talk about what you wish you had done differently or simply talking about the moment that has already passed, get the skills and support you need when it’s happening.

Keep in mind, single-session therapy doesn’t mean you won’t ever seek additional support—it means you get the help you need when you need it, without unnecessary barriers. SST makes mental health care accessible, effective, and responsive to real-life ebbs and flows.

(P.S. This article is an educational resource for those considering a short term therapy model and does not imply that other methods are less important. Whether you are on a shorter-term or longer-term journey, the most important part is getting the type of support you need, when you need it.)
